What companies look for

by Carl Mueller

searchingI recently read an article where the writer discussed what companies look for when hiring a new staff member.

Specifically he was answering the question “what do companies look for.”

Interestingly, I’ve never actually heard someone being asked this question during an interview so I’m not exactly sure why he felt the need to answer it.

Companies – and hiring managers – hire people for many different reasons but in general terms, they hire someone because they have a need ie. a need for more sales, a need for better marketing, a need for another delivery driver, a need for whatever.

I’d be less concerned about what companies want and I’d be more concerned about figuring out what the specific company I’m interviewing with – and the hiring manager(s) specifically – wants.

When you join a new company – and in particular a large one – you’ll probably find that day to day decisions that affect you probably come from your direct manager and not from people above them. Sure, the whole direction of the company may be set by the executives but it’s your direct manager who you’ll be more likely to see and have to deal with on a daily basis.

In my experience, my opinion of the company I was working for was largely based on my experience with my immediate manager. In that regard, I’d be most concerned about figuring out and understanding what they expect of me.
